How I ended up in the world of Software Testing?

How I landed myself in Software Testing?

This is my first blog and I’m writing it with lot of anxiety and being honest as I’m touching the most sensitive part of software testing career.

When I was a Student…
When I was pursuing post-graduation, I remember, I and my friends were least interested in getting into testing domain, not a single student in the class was looking for a testing career.
We had a feeling that anyone who gets into testing domain is under skilled and not good at programming, testing is a no-brainer job. Also we believed that testers won’t get as much  respect as Developers get.
Time passed and my feeling on software testing was still the same.  I was offered Development Job in a reputed MNC during the campus selection. So I was Happy to be called as a DEVELOPER.
I was in the last semester and was looking for a project in a software company. Then another reputed MNC offered me an internship offer. Well you might already guess the internship offered was for a Testing Project.
I accepted the offer halfheartedly as I had no choice, getting internship was hard.

Beginning of My Testing Career…. SILVER LINING
I entered the company; I got introduced to the colleagues in the team where I had to do project as part of the internship.

It didn't take much time for me to realize that the entire crap I had in the back of my mind about software testing is not REAL.
All the testers in the team were more skilled than me, passionate about testing, they were respected too. I felt ashamed of myself for judging the domain without knowing ABC of it.

Gradually I developed interest in software testing, I’m glad that I found the bug in myself (FIRST BUG) and also got rid of it. I started enjoying my job, felt proud of my work.

I finished my internship and I was offered permanent position as a TESTER for the same team. I had to make a choice between Development and Testing, and I chose Testing. I accepted the testing offer wholeheartedly and very much thankful for the organization for giving me an opportunity to pursue my career as a Tester. Now I’m a Tester by Choice and not Tester by Chance.

Present (Almost being 5 years in Software Testing World)
  • I feel blessed! I feel proud to be a tester contributing to the product quality and team success.
  • I do not expect someone to respect me instead I earn respect for myself. I take pride of what I’m doing.
  • I have few of my friends who hesitate to introduce themselves as TESTERS. So I preach them to understand the hard reality.
  • I talk to my Lecturers. I ask them to guide students and remove any myths that they might have on making a career in software testing.
  • My wife (also my classmate then) is also a software tester who’s an University Rank Holder. And there are many toppers who choose Software Testing as their career. So for anyone who has a thinking that Testing is a no-brainer job, NO it is not.

So how did you get into Software Testing?

       Cheers,
       Sunil

  2. Hi Sunil,
Its a good one. Your have shared the views/thoughts which we commonly find among people.
I liked it, quite inspirational too. And I agree with you Testing has its own beauty, and Respect.
I also would like to add some more points.

Generally when you are in a testing profession at the begining of your career, you find people in your batch telling you "Dont worry, you can change your domain to development after 1 or 2 years,

And at the end of 2 years, you'll find people who threaten you " If you want to switch to development ,time is now!, or else you can never!,

And at the end 3 years, "Now you cant do anything, you have to continue with this field,I hope you find some good oppurtunities in your line"

After 3 years , For your surprise there were some of my were friends saying "I also should have chosen testing" :)

So I agree with you that Testing earns its own respect..

nice one:-). Nice quote also "Tester by Choice and not Tester by Chance".

Testers take care of risks in the future. It should be valued.

I like testing.........I am Developer by chance not by choice.

One more thing to share my first task in Software industry was testing ...I am happy for that.

    1. If you are a Developer by chance then you have to retrospect yourself whether you are doing justice to your job.
